Hohenzollern Castle: Home of a Dynasty

Germany is a land filled with historical buildings and German castles and forts are among the most renowned in the world. Each week I publish a post about a German castle or fort and tell you – my readers – about its history, important things to see there and much more.

This week we head south once more to the beautiful German state of Baden-Württemberg. In addition to being a place of immense beauty, Baden-Württemberg is home to the Hohenzollern Castle, the former seat of the House of Hohenzollern. This intimidating and majestic castle is in the Swabian Alps, near the town of Bisingen, and is perched on top of a mountain.

castle was built as well – and ended with the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1918 and the subsequent foundation of the Weimar Republic. Today, it is a museum run by the head of the House of Hohenzollern. The site is reachable by bus and car but be prepared for a steep climb up. For those not fans of climbs, there’s a shuttle bus as well. The views from the top, however, are awesome.

Once inside, there are lot of interesting things to see such as the Prussian Crown and the tobacco box that saved Frederick the Great’s life during the Seven Years’ War, along with many other Prussian artifacts. The Count’s Hall is particularly awe inspiring.

If you go at a time when guided tours are not being provided, you can go in yourself and inquire about the artifacts or the rooms from the very pleasant and eager guides who can be found inside. Hohenzollern Castle offers a commanding view of the surrounding Black Forest. Suffice it to say, you won’t be disappointed.

Now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Like most tourist destinations, there is a cost associated with everything. The various prices can be found here. As you will see, parking fees apply. The shuttle bus from the foot of the mountain to the top costs as well. However, take my advice and climb if you can. Unless it’s not a clear day. And, since you’re already there, don’t miss other attractions in the world famous Black Forest.
